If you were alive in the ‘60s, which side were you on? Were you in the streets or in the service? Did you spit or were spit on — or were you unaware or unable to participate in the conversations during those traumatic years? Well, if you weren’t there or don’t have an opinion, here’s your chance to re-engage in this gut-wrenching choice: obey or resist.
The recent speech by Trump to the military at Quantico told the Generals to prepare to “fight the enemy within.” The past few days in Chicago & Portland are showing us exactly what this means.
Today I went to a press conference at San Antonio City Hall sponsored by a new local group called Vets Defending Democracy.
The gathering wasn’t large, but the message was mighty: active duty military service members must obey their oath to support and defend the Constitution. These veterans are willing to stand strong and encourage troops to disobey orders to attack us at home, in the streets, and now even in our cars and homes.
This is not the only group to reach out to active military. About Face: Veterans Against the War (which is supported by the American Friends Service Committe) handed out cards at the event (see below).
The pamphlet handed out today provided the oath of enlistment, as well as legal resources and constitutional rules related to the military. Here are some links:
I never spit on anyone, much less somebody in the military. I did protest against the Vietnam War, attend teach-ins, and had the difficult conversations with my parents. Later, I worked with the Department of Defense as a contractor, visiting bases and supporting the MWR efforts to help troops deployed get through their tours. Now, I want to help service members say NO to any violent attack in our US cities.
There’s another question looming on the not-so-distant future: will the military be used to disrupt the 2026 election? If so, will the service members comply?
Will service members obey their orders and turn against us as we peacefully assemble in the coming weeks and vote next year, or will they be strong and resist with us?
